Berlin

April 30, 2008

I’m still recovering from the 24 hours I spent in Berlin on Tuesday with several of the other Unseen photographers. Think plenty of camera geekery (specifically of the large format variety), a bit of good beer and plenty of gallery visits. The highlights for me included seeing the Amy Stein show at /pool gallery, meeting Klaus Münzner from Neun Plus and the amazing pizza I had near Rosenthaler Platz. I’ve only been to Berlin twice but I think it’s quickly becoming one of my favourite places. As soon as I can stomach the cheapness that is flying with Ryanair (in every sense of the word cheap) I’ll be back there for more.

One of the reviewers I had the good fortune of meeting in Hamburg was Jim Casper, who runs the website Lens Culture. I had a good discussion with him about my work and as with all of the reviewers I came away inspired to make more photographs. I’m really excited and flattered that Menagerie is now on Lens Culture, there’s some brilliant photography over there so you should go and have a look at the blog as well as the main site. Thanks Jim!

Updates

April 22, 2008

I’ve just updated my website with some of the progress I’ve been making with my fragments. Not all of the images are at the final stages of disintegration but they’re all pretty near to it I think, and I want them on the site so that progress is visible to other people. I’m planning on having some more broken down and unintelligible than others. Only two weeks left of the making stages before I have to start getting exhibition prints done for Exiit, so I’ve got a bit of work to do. I haven’t even started on the video part, but I’m still debating whether to show it at all this time round. Any suggestions or comments are welcome, as always.

Back from Hamburg

April 22, 2008

I’m back from Hamburg, a great time was had by all and I’m now wondering what exactly I was so nervous about before. I’ll write a bit more in detail about the whole thing later in the week. Right now I’m super busy getting things ready for the Exiit festival, catching up on emails and picking up all the little bits and pieces that have to be taken care of now, so in the mean time you can enjoy this snap of a photography shop we spotted from the U-Bahn.

Going

April 17, 2008

We’re leaving for Hamburg in a few hours. I’m just making the final preparations and trying to make sure I don’t forget anything, and if I do forget anything then trying to make sure it’s something that isn’t vital to the trip (i.e. not my portfolio, not my camera, not my toothbrush). Still feeling a bit nervous but at least now I am able to channel that nervous energy into actually getting there.

The past few days have been taken up printing and making books to give to reviewers. Here are some pictures. For people who’ve never made books before I think we did an ok job. Hopefully other people will feel that way too!

Annexinema

April 14, 2008

I’m starting to feel ever so slightly nervous about the portfolio reviews in Hamburg this weekend, so instead of dwelling on that I’m just trying to look forward to the 25th. Why? Because then it’ll be over, whether it goes terribly or not, and also because the third Annexinema will be happening.

Held in Stand Assembly’s Annexe (get it?) in Nottingham, Annexinema is run by AMIS. Expect lots of short films, ranging from straightforward narrative to the undeniably surreal, with plenty of cheap and tasty food and drink. If that’s not enough, they’ve managed to get hold of a 16mm projector this time so a few films will be shown in their original format. Go here for more information.

There are usually installations and other various arty things going on during the evening as well. Last time Luke’s Moving Portraits were shown.

I love these inflatable sculptures by Joshua Allen Harris. The polar bear is my favourite I think. Came across them via the Wooster Collective.

April 1, 2008

Elizabeth Soule has some really lovely work on her website, and prints for sale on etsy. I’ll be buying one or two as soon as I can possibly afford to.
