Art and the Holocaust
September 4, 2008
There are some interesting discussions going on in the comments section of this post on the guardian’s art blog regarding the place of art in discourse on the Holocaust.

Albert Kahn

If, like me, you were unfortunate enough to miss BBC Four’s documentary about Kahn’s ‘Archives of the Planet’ you’ll be glad to know that the whole thing is available to watch on BBC iPlayer until next Wednesday. I highly recommend you see it.

1000 Words
August 20, 2008

1000 Words is an online photography magazine “dedicated to highlighting the best work being produced internationally in photography today.” Issue 1 was launched very recently and there’s an interesting mix of work included, both from names I recognise and names I don’t. 1000 Words also has a blog that’s worth checking out. Incidentally a couple of my images from Fragments were featured on there recently, which reminds me – in the next few days I should have several new Fragments on my website. I’ve been stalling a bit over the past few weeks but I’m starting to get the itch again, so expect to see more new work in the near future…
Free Rangers 2: Martina Lindqvist
August 4, 2008

“Rågskär is a modest, rocky island situated 15 kilometres off the coast of central Finland. Mostly red, but sometimes a faded yello w or green, a few small, wooden cottages are scattered along the shoreline bearing witness to human presence within a space where otherwise there is none.
The island is a place where real and unreal finally dissolves, a place that can only exist in imagination. The island can only be touched in pictures by circumventing the usual way of the camera, and each image in the series is consequently an interpretation and a recreation in miniature of a holiday photograph lifted from its carefully arranged space in the family album. Rather than being tied to the physical properties of the real world these images look to tease out the character and personality of a rather shy dot in the sea. The photographs make visible something akin to an introspect reality which nonetheless seems just as real.”

Another Interview
July 25, 2008
I’ve just done an interview about my work & experiences as a young photographer with artist & blogger Claudio Parentela. You can read it here: http://coward33sneeze15.blogspot.com/. There is a huge variety of work on Claudio’s numerous blogs, so have a look around and see if there’s anything that catches your eye. Here are three others to start you off:

Free Rangers 1: Peter Watkins
July 24, 2008
So I’ve finally gotten around to dipping into that huge pile of postcards and business cards that’s been sitting on my desk since Free Range, and as promised I’m going to start posting about some of my favourite work from the show. First up: Peter Watkin’s series Hope of Additional Light/Now We See A Darkness.
Watkin’s website seems pretty bare at the moment, and I couldn’t find any information about this series but nevertheless I’m struck by the weird, garish beauty of these photographs. I really liked the asymmetrical hanging too. No wonder they were chosen for the University of Westminster posters.

Messy
July 14, 2008
For the next couple of days at least my website is going to be a bit messy and there could be more than a few broken links littering the place. Sorry about that. I’m going through a bit of an overhaul as far as layout goes, but it’ll look better when I’m done. I promise…
Up & Coming Exhibition
July 3, 2008
This is fairly late notice but for those of you who are going to be in Liverpool over the next couple of weeks might want to check out the Up & Coming exhibition at CUC Northwest. Several prints from Fragments are being shown, along with Luke’s portraits and a whole host of other young artists and recent graduates from around the UK.
The Up & Coming website is not up and running as I type this, but I’m told it should be online soon: http://www.upandcoming.org/
More information can be found here.
